This jackfruit pulled pork recipe uses BBQ sauce to create a vegan version of a cookout classic. It’s the ultimate dupe for a pulled pork sandwich!
Jackfruit is a sweet and tasty fruit that you can buy canned at most grocery stores. When cooked & shredded, it’s nearly the exact same texture as pulled pork. And in this recipe, it’s mixed with BBQ sauce for a sweet, vegan version of ‘pulled pork.’
JACKFRUIT PULLED PORK INGREDIENTS
- 2 (20 oz) cans jackfruit
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 cup diced yellow onion
- 1 cup BBQ sauce, divided
- Pepper, to taste
HOW TO MAKE JACKFRUIT PULLED PORK
? Step 1: Prepare the jackfruit
Drain the cans of jackfruit and rinse well.
? Step 2: Cook the onion
In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add 1 tablespoon olive oil. Once hot, add the diced onion. Saute for 3 - 4 minutes, until translucent.
? Step 3: Cook the jackfruit
Add the jackfruit and ¾ cup BBQ sauce to the skillet. Pour in ⅓ cup of water and stir. Cover skillet and simmer 15 - 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
? Step 4: Shred the jackfruit
Using 2 forks or a potato masher, shred the jackfruit into bite-sized pieces. Sprinkle generously with pepper to taste.

Turn up the heat to medium-high and cook for 5 minutes, uncovered, stirring frequently.

Remove the pan from the heat and stir in remaining ¼ cup BBQ sauce.

- BBQ sauce: since jackfruit is naturally sweet, this recipe works best with a BBQ sauce that's smoky, mesquite or traditional (not a honey BBQ sauce).
- Jackfruit: be sure to rinse your jackfruit well. Use a large strainer to toss and rinse the jackfruit under running water. Remove any tough/hard parts.
